Power Base Inventory (PBI®)
The power Base Inventory assesses the approaches you use to influence others. Influence is the ability to get others to do what you want them to do by altering their beliefs or behaviour.
Reserve My Spot NowThe personal power
The personal power bases (information, expertise, goodwill) must be personally developed or earned by the leader: knowledge that can be shared with team members, prone expertise, feelings of goodwill. The personal power bases take the leader beyond the minimum in his or her ability to influence other team members.
The position power bases
The position power bases (authority, reward, discipline) are associated with the leader's position or title: the formal authority to direct others' activities, to award or discipline others. On this way, the organization provides the leader with a minimum of resources with which to influence team members.
WHAT IS THE PBI INSTRUMENT?
Consider these definitions:
- Leadership - influencing team members to do the right things
- Influence - altering people's beliefs or behaviour
- Power - the ability to influence
From these definitions, it is clear that is an essential requirement for effective leadership and that power is a requirement for influence. Yet people often have negative feelings about the word power. The reason is that power is not a sigle thing. Several types of power exist and some appear less attractive than others. The purpose of the Power Base Inventory is to acquaint you with the different types of power you can use to influence others and how to choose among them.
